Shamiran Istifan explores the complexity of social coexistence in her installative works. She deals with questions of identity and belonging that are central to generations that have grown up in two cultures. She uses various media such as video, sculpture and textiles and aesthetically draws on the symbolism, mythology and pop culture of a cultural area characterized by the diaspora. Istifan was born in Baden and is a member of the Assyrian-Aramaic exile community, a minority from the Middle East. She incorporates both subjective observations and research into her work. New works are being created for the exhibition in Aarau.
