Transylvanian Museum

The Transylvanian Museum in Gundelsheim introduces its visitors to the culture and history of the historic region of Transylvania—the legendary land nestled in the Carpathian Arc, located in present-day Romania. As the regional museum for Transylvania, it displays a wide selection of cultural and historical artifacts and also houses an extensive art collection. With more than 23,000 objects, the museum houses the most significant collection on the culture and history of the German-descended Transylvanian Saxons within the context of their multi-ethnic and multi-religious environment outside of Romania. On the ground floor, eight thematic sections provide an overview of the region’s eventful history and multifaceted culture from the Middle Ages to the present. Since 2024, the museum’s treasure chamber has also been displaying goldsmith works as well as rare textiles from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Special exhibitions are held several times a year on the upper floor of the museum. This floor also houses the painting gallery, featuring works from the Baroque period to the present, as well as a display storage area for the glass collection, textiles, and ceramics.
