The Sea as a Subject for Transylvanian Artists
As is well known, Transylvania is a landlocked region with no access to the sea. Nevertheless, the sea is a popular motif in the work of Transylvanian artists.
Coastal landscapes—sometimes sunny, sometimes stormy—can be found alongside harbor scenes depicting, on the one hand, idyllic fishing villages and, on the other, industrial ports as symbols of progress and the working world. Boats serve as motifs for cheerful vacation fun, but also as symbols of “setting out for new shores,” as the artist Kaspar Lukas Teutsch titled one of his works. The exhibition invites visitors to “immerse themselves” in a diverse array of maritime depictions from the 19th century to the present.
