Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain
In 1998, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMCS) opened its doors to the public. Its building is organised around a vast nave that serves the temporary exhibition spaces and the permanent display, as well as the Auditorium, the bookshop-boutique, the Museum Library and the Art-Café.

The collection, comprising some 18,000 works spanning the period from 1870 to the present day, is clearly focused on Europe. The modern collection ranges from Impressionism to the pioneers of abstraction, not forgetting the decorative arts, and highlights three major artists born in Strasbourg: Gustave Doré (1832-1883), Hans Jean Arp (1886-1966), and Marcelle Cahn (1895-1981). The contemporary collection highlights art from the 1960s to the present day, and includes a collection of German paintings that is unique in France.

The Museum keeps a close eye on young artists, and its annual programme of exhibitions and acquisitions policy give pride of place to artists of the new generation.
