Colonial traces in the Württemberg State Museum
Where do all the fascinating things we encounter in museums come from? The exhibition takes visitors on an exciting exploration of the stories behind the items in the collection - and opens up new perspectives on our past and present. A wide variety of objects from all over the world are on display - from antique glass from the Ottoman Empire to porcelain from China. But the exhibition offers more than just treasures from the past: It takes a critical look at the origins of many objects and reveals how closely their paths can be linked to colonial power relations and global entanglements. For the first time, the Landesmuseum is presenting the results of its post-colonial provenance research and invites visitors to trace the often winding paths of the objects. Visitors learn about the backgrounds of collection items from over two millennia, find out more about their moving stories and become part of an open process: because not all questions already have an answer. The exhibition shows how researchers investigate the traces of the past and how the handling of colonial heritage still shapes our thinking today
