Silk Ribbon. Capital, Art and Crisis
The silk ribbon industry that originated in the 16th century became the most important employer in the city and region of Basel. Silk ribbons from Basel were de rigueur in international fashion throughout the world. They were produced in cottage industry in the Basel region and in factories.
The exhibition describes the rise and fall of the silk ribbon industry in the 19th and early 20th century and its far-reaching consequences for textile workers, factory owners and families working at home. Numerous splendid specimens testify to the beauty of the silk ribbon, and two functioning weaving looms are a special attraction.
