This year, the town of Neuchâtel looks back on 850 years of history. Its history is well documented thanks to documents and archaeological finds, although many traces of its medieval heyday have been lost due to floods and wars.
To this day, unexplored remains have been preserved in layers of soil up to two meters deep in the town. Whenever the opportunity arises, archaeologists uncover the "archive underground" and bring new details about the history of our town to light. This was also the case with the excavations between Schlüsselstrasse and Metzgerstrasse, which were carried out from 2013 to 2015. This involved examining 3200 m² of soil and documenting over 1400 features.
The exhibition presents the results of these excavations. The finds range from the beginnings of settlement in the 12th century to the first destruction of the town in the 17th century.

Die Ergebnisse der Ausgrabungen werfen neues Licht auf die frühe Besiedlungsgeschichte und die Zeit vor der Stadtgründung, über die wir noch wenig wissen. Zudem geben sie Aufschluss über das ansässige Handwerk und das blühende wirtschaftliche Leben Neuenburgs.
Das Handwerk des Hafners stellen wir besonders in den Mittelpunkt. Denn die Anzahl und Qualität der gefundenen Kacheln lassen auf eine überregional bedeutende Produktion von Ofenkacheln am Oberrhein hier in Neuenburg schließen.
In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Landesamt für Denkmalpflege werden neue spannende Details zur Geschichte und Entwicklung unserer Stadt präsentiert.
