The Offenburg Ensemble and Der Salmen jointly present a matinee concert featuring works by contemporary Jewish composers.

Composer Pia Gilbert was born Pia Wertheimer in Kippenheim in 1921 before fleeing to the United States at age 16. She became a piano accompanist for pioneers of modern dance such as Doris Humphrey and Martha Graham, wrote compositions for dance theater, among other things, and taught at the Juilliard School of Music in New York.
Composer Paul Ben-Haim, born in Munich in 1897 as Paul Frankenburger, was a conductor and choir director at the Augsburg Opera and emigrated to Tel Aviv in 1933, where he fused his European-influenced compositional style with Oriental-Arabic elements and Jewish folklore.

The program also features works by Avner Dorman, Boris Yoffe, Ernst Toch, Albert Weill, and Darius Milhaud, one of France’s most prolific and successful composers of the 20th century.
