The "Culture Break" is a 15-minute guided tour—a thought-provoking reflection—for your lunch break

Early in the morning of October 22, 1940, more than 6,000 Jewish men, women, and children in Baden, the Palatinate, and the Saarland were ordered to leave their apartments and homes. Within a few hours, women, men, and children were forced to leave behind their former lives and all their possessions. They were deported to the French internment camp at Gurs.
Who was responsible for this deportation plan? What did these people have to endure before they arrived at the foot of the Pyrenees? What awaited them there?

This guided tour examines the events of October 22, 1940, and sheds light on the responsibilities involved as well as the role of the non-Jewish neighbors who witnessed this injustice.
