Its foundation around 1175 by Duke Bertold IV of Zähringen laid the foundations for the importance of the town of Neuenburg am Rhein for centuries to come. Belonging to the circle of Zähringen towns is an essential part of the self-image and identity of Neuenburg am Rhein.
But who were these Zähringers? Warlords, builders of castles and churches, founders of towns and candidates for the royal throne - all these descriptions apply to the Dukes of Zähringen.
Originally from Swabia, they came to Freiburg, where they built their ancestral castle in Zähringen and built up a huge sphere of power on the Upper and High Rhine and in Burgundy. For around 150 years, the Zähringers were among the most influential imperial princes of their time. The last Duke of Zähringen, Bertold V, died in 1218.
The exhibition provides a comprehensive insight into the family history and the role of the Zähringers in the political arena of the time.

Seit Dezember 2025 führt die Stadt Neuenburg am Rhein den offiziellen Namenszusatz „Zähringerstadt“. Anlässlich dieser Bewilligung durch das Innenministerium zeigt das Museum für Stadtgeschichte noch einmal die Sonderausstellung „Die Zähringer. Mythos und Wirklichkeit“ und zeigt damit die Verbundenheit der Stadt mit seinen Gründern auf.
Die Wanderausstellung „Die Zähringer. Mythos und Wirklichkeit“ wurde vom Alemannischen Institut Freiburg, dem Stadtarchiv Freiburg, dem Historischen Seminar, Lehrstuhl für Mittelalterliche Geschichte I, Abt. Landesgeschichte an der Universität Freiburg konzipiert und von der Sparkasse Freiburg-Nördlicher Breisgau realisiert.
