Walther Teutsch // William Shakespeare. Sonnets in pictures
The cabinet exhibition combines expressionist woodcuts by the Transylvanian artist Walther Teutsch with a piece of world literature, William Shakespeare's famous sonnets.
The Transylvanian-born painter and graphic artist Walther Teutsch (1883-1964) studied in Leipzig and Munich, where he lived from 1906. From 1910, he combined traditional motifs with an expressive style. He became a member of the Munich New Secession and a professor at the Munich School of Arts and Crafts in 1931.
His works were classified as "degenerate" by the Nazi regime in 1937 and he took early retirement in 1939. After the Second World War, he became a member of the Neue Gruppe, which also included Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Erich Heckel, and taught again at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich until 1952.
One of his most important graphic works are the 10 woodcuts on William Shakespeare's sonnets, which were published in Leipzig in 1922.
In the exhibition, the sonnets are presented in the original English text and the German translation together with the respective woodcuts, which artistically "paraphrase" them, analogous to the book edition.
