Ganassi's virtuoso violas
The latest craze in Italy is a new instrument: the viola d'arco! It is a versatile instrument that can imitate any voice from low to high. For all enthusiastic newcomers, here is a book that explains how to tune and play each of the three sizes of the viola! In this book you will learn how to compose a prelude or arrange several parts together (you may wish to accompany a friend who sings or plays the flute) and how best to play with others in a consort. There are practical tips on using the bow and playing pizzicato as well as advice on tuning and phrasing according to Master Gombert. Play your favorite music by Josquin, Adriano and all the other great masters - learn viola d'arco today! (Advertisement for Ganassi's Regola Rubertina from 1542)
