History and tradition
Hofstetten bei Brienz
Switzerland
General informationThe open-air museum Ballenberg is a foundation whose purpose it is to preserve historical rural edifices from all parts of Switzerland by taking them apart piece by piece and reassembling them on our grounds for everyone to visit and as a basis for scientific enquiry. Ballenberg is a living cultural centre with events, courses, exhibitions and publications.ExhibitionMore than one hundred centuries-old buildings from all over Switzerland, 250 farmyard animals, traditional, old-time gardens and fields, demonstrations of local crafts and many special events create a vivid impression of rural life in days gone by.Guided toursFor groups and schoolchildren Ballenberg offers guided tours, Treat and Active programmes that provide deeper insight into certain domains. What was it like in those times to bake a loaf of bread? How did the farmers‘ wives manage to cook in their simple kitchens? How much skill was required to carve a small wooden shoe? Roll up your sleeves and try it out yourself!EventsThe yearly events comprise besides others the Ballenberg trouser-hold wrestling, the medicinal herb days, the autumn market and the Brächete. Furthermore, there are different events featuring specific topics such as for example silk production, traditional costumes and dances, traditional handcraft, linen production, farmyard animals and many more.
