Pioneers of geometric abstraction
Exhibitions

With Wir werden bis zur Sonne gehen. Pioneers of Geometric Abstraction, the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum is focusing on the importance of female artists for the development of geometric abstraction in the 20th century in winter 2024/25. Names such as Wassily Kandinsky, Kasimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian are still primarily associated with non-objective painting after the First World War. Correcting this one-sided narrative is an essential approach of the exhibition project. In fact, artists such as Lyubov Popova, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Sonia Delaunay were pioneers in the development of a geometric-abstract formal language. From the 1940s onwards, artists such as Verena Loewensberg, Aurélie Nemours and Vera Molnár also played a decisive role in the further development of non-representational art. The same can be observed beyond the cultural centers of the Western world in Central and Latin America or in the Middle East. Here, Lygia Clark in Brazil, Lydi Prati in Argentina and Saloua Raouda Choucair in Lebanon, among others, developed their own constructive-abstract formal language.
