Shibori is a fabric patterning technique. In Japanese, shiboru means pressing or wringing and describes how unique patterns are created by folding, binding and sewing fabric. After dyeing, all bindings and seams are opened and the designs become visible. Plangi, bandhani, tritik and adire are other names for this technique, which is also known as tie-dye. In addition to examples from Japan, textiles from other Asian countries, Europe, Africa and South America are shown.
