Shibori refers to a fabric patterning technique. In Japanese, shiboru means to compress or wring, and describes how unique patterns are created by folding, tying, and sewing. After dyeing, all the ties and seams are removed, revealing the intended designs. Plangi, bandhani, tritik, and adire are other terms used for this technique, also known as tie-dye. In addition to samples from Japan, the exhibition also features textiles from other Asian countries as well as from Europe, Africa, and South America.
