Layers and Narratives - the title of the new traveling exhibition of the international textile art group QuiltArt contains everything that makes up this association. 40 years ago, the British Quilt Guild decided to take a new direction in quilting. Eight women, including one from Germany, were selected and set in motion a movement that is still influential today. The quilt as a work of art, a means of expression and a personal challenge is the focus of this group.
QuiltArt set standards: traditional forms of expression such as the three layers of a quilt were rethought and a free interpretation of techniques was sought. In the constant search for innovation, painting, drawing, printing or computer-controlled embroidery complement the textile possibilities. The clear form gives way to a free surface design; works are created for the room. The group shows great diversity; the individuality of each member strengthens the cohesion.
In addition to technique and form, the reference to contemporary themes, nature and the personal is also important. Combining these three areas into a meaningful work is impressive.
