Marcel van Eeden tells exciting stories that revolve around blind spots in history. The 50-part photographic series August 6, 1870 takes us right into the middle of the Franco-Prussian War and takes us on a journey that starts in Alsace, leads via the palace gardens in Schwetzingen to the Anatomical Institute in Freiburg to Alexander Ecker and also extends to Algeria. The focus is on the story of an Algerian colonial soldier. With photographs taken with old lenses and printed using the historical rubber printing process, and with the help of quotes from historical texts, van Eeden explores a time that still touches on issues of racism and colonialism today.
