Commuters Between Cultures
No matter what material or firing technique this experimental ceramist chooses, he always returns to the spherical form in his vessels and sculptures—which he considers equally valid means of expression. His preferred tool is the knife, which he uses to create radial textures on surfaces. Recently, he has revisited the historical technique of marbling. The artist, who works across cultural boundaries, is known for his pi discs, which traditionally hold great symbolic value. After completing his art studies, the son of European immigrants (*1962), who holds dual citizenship (U.S./Switzerland), teaches at renowned universities in the U.S. Today, he is the only foreigner teaching in the ceramics department at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts.
The exhibition opening is on Friday, April 23, at 7:00 p.m., featuring an introduction and music. The artist will be present.
