With the special exhibition “Lost Places in Karlsruhe: Photographs by Harald Wacker,” the City Museum presents a lesser-known side of the “Fan-Shaped City.” Through his camera, photographer Harald Wacker captured places in Karlsruhe that no longer exist, have since been forgotten, or have been repurposed, thereby preserving their unique stories. His photographs not only depict urban architecture in a state of constant change; they also invite visitors to immerse themselves in the distinctive aesthetics of each location.
Accompanying the photographs are selected objects that were once part of these places or were produced there—such as cosmetics from the F. Wolff & Sohn soap factory, butcher’s hooks from the old slaughterhouse, or a painting from the artists’ studios near the main train station. These objects bridge the past and the present, offer insights into daily life at these locations, and bring the lost spaces back to life.
Also part of the special exhibition is the escape game “The Last Day at the Baths,” which invites all visitors to playfully immerse themselves in the history of the former Tullabad, which is now used as the Exotic House at the Zoological Garden.
