In 1927, the City of Belfort decided to renovate the municipal theater built in 1878. Julien Hirsch, a Parisian architect, was chosen for the project. Through the intermediary of Léon Delarbre, curator of fine arts at the Belfort museum, Jean-Eugène Bersier (1895-1978) was chosen to create the painted sets for the auditorium and foyer. Several artists worked with him on the project. In the auditorium, Belfort, its history and famous people take center stage. In the foyer, the artists pay homage to the various genres of theater by depicting scenes from several plays (Pelléas et Mélisandre, Le Misanthrope, Hamlet...). Discover a selection of these beautiful sets in the Bartholdi area of the Musée d'Histoire de Belfort.
