Content
Regent and mother, collector and builder: no other woman has left behind as many fascinating buildings on the Upper Rhine as Margravine Sibylla Augusta of Baden-Baden (reigned 1707-1727). Shimmering stucco marble floors, picture panels made of semi-precious stones and wallpaper made of glass beads are just some of the highlights of Baroque craftsmanship that have been preserved in her Favorite pleasure palace in Rastatt-Förch. Elaborately embroidered beds, original Asian and Asian-inspired decorations and her historical collection of porcelain and faience can also be admired there.
Just as unusual is the interior of her palace church in Rastatt, which was consecrated in 1723 and, with a tomb of Christ and a sacred staircase, was part of a cycle of replicas of holy sites from the life of Jesus. The life of this courageous woman, which was characterized by the duty of representation and demonstration of power as well as by strokes of fate, is also discussed.
