Christ, St. George, or a Warrior?
On All Saints’ Day, the tour takes us back to the Early Middle Ages and the earliest traces of Christianity. Unique decorative discs from Hüfingen depict the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and a mysterious horseman defeating a serpentine creature—Christ, or perhaps St. George? However, the motif of the victorious lance-wielding horseman predates Christianity and has been reinterpreted.
Together with archaeologist Paula Schecker, participants will discover how Christian faith and older visual traditions intersected in the Early Middle Ages.
The event will be followed by light refreshments served by the Friends of the Museum.
