Challenges against the backdrop of climate change
Lecture by forestry graduate and expert for nature conservation and environmental issues Dr. Volker Späth
A lecture by forestry graduate Dr. Volker Späth is dedicated to the Rhine floodplains in the district of Rastatt downstream of the Iffezheim barrage as a special but sensitive habitat. Anyone who frequently visits the Rhine promenade in Plittersdorf will notice that the water level in the Rhine fluctuates by several meters. In the Rhine floodplain, you will then see either flooded wooded areas, bulging oxbow lakes or dried-up areas with small rivulets. With climate change, floodplain waters are drying up faster and faster at low water. This destroys the connectivity of the water network and many fish and aquatic organisms are unable to leave the critical areas quickly enough to retreat to deeper waters or the Rhine. The lecture will show ways of ensuring better flow through the floodplain and protecting the watercourses from "tipping over".
The lecture is part of the accompanying program of the special exhibition in the city museum "Streams of Life (on) the Rhine and Murg" and is free of charge. Registration is not necessary. The venue is the Atrium in the Rossi House, Herrenstr. 15.
