But what exactly characterizes a livestock guarding dog and why can they be found in Switzerland today, even in the Basel region? In this presentation, participants will gain a comprehensive insight into the world of these impressive animals. It will explain which breeds are used as livestock guarding dogs, how they are trained and what special behaviors characterize them. It will also explain why their use has become increasingly important in Switzerland in recent years, particularly in connection with the return of large carnivores such as the wolf.

In addition to the theoretical introduction, practical aspects are also discussed: What to look out for when encountering a herd with livestock guarding dogs? How do you behave correctly to avoid conflicts? The lecture provides a better understanding of the interaction between humans, animals and nature and is intended to help promote the respectful coexistence of agriculture, recreational use and herd protection.
