Josephine Foster and Son of Buzzi
Saturday, May 4, 7 p.m.
Location: Rehmann Museum

Folk art concert with guitar and piano by singer-songwriter Josephine Foster (Colorado, USA). Before that, Son of Buzzi (Zurich/Munich) plays hypnotic instrumental music on the steel-string guitar.

Singer-songwriter Josephine Foster (Colorado, USA) is a coloratura folk singer who takes the traditional genre into new spheres despite rather sad themes. Despite her training, she did not follow the path of a classical opera singer, but she still carries the spirit of the genre into her art. She draws new ideas from folk songs, because for her folk music and classical music are closely related. She does not describe herself as a folk singer, but as a "singer who does her own thing, inspired by everything I encounter".

On her latest solo album Domestic Sphere, Josephine plays exclusively with her electric guitar, subverting the usual vocal range to embody other frequencies and sounds that go beyond the surface layer of the songs. Godmother (Fire) and Spellbinder (Takuroku) are two recent solo albums on which Josephine brings her own synthesizer arrangements to the fore for the first time.

Born in Colorado, Josephine Foster actually wanted to be an opera singer, but then, according to legend, worked as a wedding and funeral singer as a teenager before studying and finally releasing her first album in 2000. She has released around twenty albums as a soloist or in various ensembles. Marginal, but not insignificant, are her unorthodox arrangements of 19th century German songs. Foster is herself a poet and also a visual artist.

Son of Buzzi (Zurich/Munich)

His hypnotic instrumental music is guaranteed to have a calming effect. With his 6- and 12-string guitar, electric guitars, bass, mixing desk and improvisations, he creates his idiosyncratic ambient music. His music seems to float in the air, so light are the themes. A folk influence is often expressed.

Son of Buzzi is the pseudonym of Sebastian Bischoff, a self-taught acoustic guitarist who lives in Zurich and Munich. He has been performing as Son of Buzzi since 2019 and has already released several albums, both on his own tape label and on labels from Belgium and the USA. His main instrument is the acoustic guitar, sometimes accompanied by field recordings, synthesizers, no-input mixers or other sound generators that fit the mood.
