Johann Jakob Christoph von Grimmelshausen was not only the mayor of Renchen from 1667 until his death in 1676 but also one of the key figures of modern literature in Germany. In 1668/69 he published his book “The Adventurous Simplicissimus” which focuses on the Thirty Years' War. It is regarded indisputably as world literature and one of the most important books of the 17th century.

The Simplicissimus House is a museum dedicated to the reception history of J.J.C. von Grimmelshausen. The exhibition focuses on the dialogue between modernity and history in general and contemporary art and the person J.J.C. von Grimmelshausen in particular. Other important key figures are Max Klinger, Ernst Barlach and contemporary artists such as Claus Arnols and Udo Claaßen.
