The Argentinian comic artist José Muñoz (*1942) tells stories in stark black and white contrasts - from drastic crime stories about detective Alack Sinner to the sensitive biography of jazz legend Billie Holiday. Originals, sketches and color works show him in a comprehensive retrospective.
José Muñoz's interest in comics was met with rejection at art school: his professor disapproved of the medium and the young artist was forced to take his first steps in comics in secret. This clandestine work points to a long-standing hierarchy in art history in which narrative art was marginalized for decades.
The curator Anette Gehrig invites us to investigate the causes and mechanisms of this stubborn hierarchy and to question them critically. The freedom from art and the symbiosis with the Argentinian comic tradition has led to Muñoz advancing as an innovator of the medium.
