Content

One of the greatest Roman silver treasures in Europe. Celtic gold jewelry that once adorned huge statues of gods. Church bells buried in the forest or the loot of a master thief dumped in the Rhine: in the exhibition "Treasure troves - hidden, lost, discovered", the Basel Historical Museum traces the most spectacular finds from the Basel region.

Why were these valuable objects once buried, hidden or sunk in the Rhine? As witnesses of bygone times, they tell of wealth and religious practices, but also of war, persecution and personal fates that are closely interwoven with the history of the border triangle. The oldest treasure was hidden over 3,500 years ago, the youngest in 1995.

The focus is not only on the treasures themselves, but also on the amazing stories behind their discovery. Some finds were discovered by chance, others were brought to light through meticulous archaeological work.

Treasures from the Bronze Age to the present day from northwestern Switzerland, Alsace and southern Baden are on display. In this online event, curator Pia Kamber and assistant curator Florian Setz will guide you through the exhibition. They will be available to answer questions afterwards.
