Musée du Papier Peint

Technique and industry
In 1983 the Musée du Papier Peint established a perfect place to celebrate the history and techniques of wallpaper production. The museum demonstrates the importance wallpapers used to have in our everyday lives. Nowadays little thought is given to this product – neither in a material nor in an emotional way…

Location and surrounding: The Musée du Papier Peint is located in an 18th century commandery (‘Deutsche Ordens-Komturei) where wallpapers have been produced ever since 1797. You can find the exhibition, comprising 130,000 documents, in the museum in Rixheim, right next toMulhouse (Alsace).

The exhibition covers

- The complete range of products of the manufacturers Zuber & Cie dating back to the 18th century until today
- 30,000 pieces of different origin, dating back to the 18th century.

This archive covers basically all aspects of wallpaper production, from common to elaborate wallpapers, such as panorama wallpapers.

Apart from wallpapers, the museum also exhibits technical equipment that is directly related to the development of wallpaper from the 18th century until the 1930s.
