Where time gets lost

Painting by Michael Marcel Fuchs
Exhibitions
Heads of history VI, 2023, Öl/Leinwand
Michael Marcel Fuchs traces "non-places" in his pictures. These are airports, shopping centers, rest stops or even emergency shelters for refugees, which - anonymously and uniformly designed - offer efficient, fast or forced transit or consumption, but no possibility of identification.

The artist addresses the tension between space and people, posing questions of localization, appropriation, renunciation and isolation. In his compositions, the moving foreground always meets a background defined by vertical lines that appear to be flowing and dissolving. The rear picture plane thus offers no possibility of localization; the motifs in the foreground stand alone.

There seems to be an interplay of proximity and distance; states of suspension that have become images and can be described primarily as poetic. They are also observations of people arriving, waiting or crossing public spaces. Often introverted, thrown back on themselves, they seem removed from the here and now: a condensed eye-catcher in the middle of nowhere that carries the high intensity of the moment.
