Shortly after the end of World War II, Swiss photographer Werner Bischof (1916–1954) cycled to Freiburg. The exhibition traces the route of this journey and presents never-before-seen photographs, diary entries, and personal comments. At the same time, it offers a glimpse into the world and showcases the full diversity of Bischof’s life’s work: from his early experiments and work as a commercial photographer in Zurich, through his documentation of postwar Europe, to his time at Magnum Photos. As a photojournalist, Bischof traveled throughout Asia and the Americas, photographing with a deeply humanistic perspective and, at the same time, a high artistic standard. His images bear witness to an extraordinary sensitivity toward people and the realities of their lives.
The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Werner Bischof Estate, Zurich, and Magnum Photos, Paris.
