Ursula: Blossoming Poison

The German artist Ursula Schultze-Bluhm (1921–1999), who simply signed her works “Ursula,” is now considered one of the great rediscoveries of postwar European art. As a self-taught artist and internationally connected avant-gardist, she developed a unique cosmos filled with fantastical creatures, personal myths, and references to art history. With dark humor, intoxicating visual worlds, and unbridled imagination, she found a distinctive artistic response to the experiences of war, destruction, and societal renewal after 1945.
