Collection Spotlight
Today, they are considered masterpieces of European landscape painting. Caspar Wolf, a native of Murian, painted these works at the time on commission from the Bernese publisher Abraham Wagner. He produced some 200 oil paintings in this way. They were intended to serve as models for copperplate engravings that Wagner planned to publish alongside texts by naturalists. The first edition was published in 1777 under the title “Remarkable Views of the Swiss Mountains” and presented a completely new image of the Alps. The exhibition showcases this pioneering project through Wolf’s originals from the collection of the Aargauer Kunsthaus and prints from various series of engravings.
