Philip Guston (1913–1980) is one of the most important American artists of the mid-20th century. He is known for his shift away from Abstract Expressionism toward figurative painting, which shocked the New York art scene in the early 1970s. The constant search for artistic renewal is exhausting and repeatedly leads to crises and transitional phases in which drawing plays a central role. This large-scale retrospective focuses on the groups of drawings that repeatedly pave the way for new phases in his work.
