One of Victor Schœlcher's first major trips was to America as a porcelain merchant. In 1829, he visited Mexico and published five letters recounting his journey in the Revue de Paris en France. He was not yet the famous abolitionist he would become at the end of his journey, after observing the realities of slavery. Through his European eyes, we discover different cities, including Mexico City, and various aspects of Mexican habits and customs: leisure activities, food, culture, popular and religious festivals...
