Louis I and his passion for antiquity
King Ludwig I brought his passion for antiquity to life in an impressive way. Inspired by the rediscovered splendor of Pompeii, he created two unique testimonies to his longing for the Roman and ancient world: Villa Ludwigshöhe Palace and the Pompejanum in Aschaffenburg.
The exhibition shows how this spirit lives on in the architecture, artistic wall and ceiling paintings and mosaics at Schloss Villa Ludwigshöhe and the Pompejanum. Design drawings by the artists involved provide fascinating insights into the genesis of the two buildings. Archaeological finds from Roman city life tell of the art and everyday life of an ancient city. A central theme of the exhibition is also the rediscovery of Pompeii through excavations - then and now.
At hands-on stations, visitors can become active themselves and immerse themselves in the world of Pompeii and its aftermath in an artistic way.
