The sense of sight in art
Museum Tinguely is continuing its series on the human senses in the visual arts. In the group exhibition on the sense of sight, works of art in various media from the Baroque period to the present day are presented, offering a variety of surprising visual experiences. When looking at art, we are inevitably confronted with the premises of our visual perception: the interplay of light, darkness, color, movement and space. For centuries, artists have been experimenting with techniques, mechanisms and equipment to question and reinvent the conditions of our visual experience of our environment and its representation in art, which are shaped by cultural factors. They often deliberately cloud our everyday view of reality by integrating disruptive factors and illusions into their works, such as distortions, inversions or reflections.
