Democracy is made by people. The exhibition by the Federal President Theodor Heuss House Foundation, “Leaders of Democracy: Strong Voices for a Life of Freedom,” showcases individuals who sought to shape democratic thought and action in Germany over the past two centuries: Parliamentarians stand alongside activists, female ministers alongside union leaders, and women’s rights advocates alongside resistance fighters.
The drawings by renowned comic artist Simon Schwartz bring the “Faces of Democracy” to life: women and men who sought to fight for or improve democracy according to their own visions. The “Faces of Democracy” offer guidance, but they also provoke dissent. For democracy is always in flux and never perfect.
