Bodies bear scars. Objects hoard secrets. Memories linger on bed mattresses.
These poetic, dark visual worlds mark the introduction to the multi-layered work of Kaari Upson (1970-2021), which is being presented for the first time in a comprehensive retrospective at the Kunsthalle Mannheim. One of her works was already included in the collection in 2020 - a first moment of artistic encounter that now culminates in Upson's impressive return.
Everyday life and alienation, beauty and horror, reality and imagination collide in her multimedia work. With a detective-like, often obsessive gaze, she explores the relationship between self and other, between the inner world and social reality - often combined with a critical examination of American family life.
Highlights of the exhibition include the large-format installation "Dollhouse" and the works from her latest series "Foot Face", which are being shown for the first time. Visitors experience an immersive visual world in which they move between body-related fragments, imaginary figures and experimental materials.
