The medium of the book plays a central role in Jonathan Meese's oeuvre. The first artist's books were created at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg. There, Meese began to write and read his own texts. The first performances developed from these readings. Meese's serial way of working subsequently produced a wealth of material, which he presented in the form of installations, portfolios, books and notebooks. With the end of his time at art school, the formats and often also the material of the artist's books changed. In large collage books and folios, friends and people from the art world are combined with historical figures, philosophers or the heroines of dime novels. The style-defining elements of artists' books are also adapted for the design of special editions and exhibition catalogs.
