The Œuvre Notre-Dame Foundation is a unique institution in France, dedicated for eight centuries to the construction and preservation of Strasbourg Cathedral. Founded in the early 13th century by the Bishop of Strasbourg and the cathedral’s chapter of canons to oversee construction and manage donations and bequests, the Œuvre Notre-Dame came under the city’s control as early as the 1280s.
The exhibition highlights the importance and diversity of the missions of one of Europe’s oldest cathedral workshops, whose craftsmanship was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2020.
The exhibition, organized into 15 sections, is housed at the Musée de l’Œuvre Notre-Dame, a museum of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, which has been located in the Foundation’s historic building since 1931.
