Drawing on the Kandinsky Library’s rich collections of printed works, the exhibition aims to trace the diverse experiments with the book undertaken by modern and contemporary artists, from the late 19th century to the present day, encompassing luxury illustration, the desire to democratize art, and radical innovations. The book played a central role in most of the avant-garde movements of the 20th century, offering an alternative to the uniqueness and aura characteristic of traditional fine arts disciplines, with which it has nevertheless never ceased to engage in dialogue, to the point of, in some cases, adopting their forms—such as the book as object or the book-installation.
