One of the best-known figures at Basel Minster is St. Martin, who is on horseback about to cut his cloak in half with a sword and hand one half to a tree stump. The legend of Martin, who saved the life of a freezing beggar with half of his cloak and later, somewhat reluctantly, became Bishop of Tour, is commemorated every year down the Rhine with the participation of many children. At Basel Minster, too, a beggar should actually have replaced the tree stump to complete the sculptural program at St. Martin's Tower. The guided tour is about St. Martin, his special presence at the cathedral and the history of the impact of his cloak.
