She was a naturalist and artist, businesswoman, author and publisher of various books on flowers and caterpillars. Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was one of the first to observe the metamorphosis of insects in their habitat and record it artistically. She separated faith from research and was thus far ahead of her contemporaries. She sailed to Surinam, studied the fauna and flora there, criticized the colonialists' slavery and their pursuit of profit and lamented the disappearance of biodiversity on the sugar plantations. Metamorphosis not only shaped Maria Sibylla Merian's life's work. She herself also threw off the tight corset that her time imposed on women and constantly reinvented herself.
