Known for his nuanced, critical and eloquent comics reportage, the artist and author Joe Sacco (b. 1960) is returning to Basel. Back in 2015, Cartoonmuseum Basel dedicated a major retrospective to him, featuring original drawings. In conversation with comics expert and cultural researcher Christian Gasser, he discusses his latest works: ‘The Once and Future Riot’, which examines the subversion of India’s democratic structures by its Hindu nationalist majority, and ‘Requiem for Gaza’, a powerful work, in which Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco present the testimony of displaced Palestinians.
