A workshop report on provenance research at the HMB
In 1938, the Munich art dealer Arthur Einstein emigrated from Germany due to Nazi persecution. He had previously been forced to give up his business under pressure from the authorities. Shortly after his successful escape, he offered the Basel Historical Museum two valuable objects with Basel hallmarks from his London exile: a nautilus cup and a Büttenmann. The HMB commission agreed and acquired both. In view of the circumstances of his escape and the sale that took place soon afterwards, some questions arise about the context of this acquisition. Did the two objects come from his own estate or did he sell them for someone else? Was the sale connected to his escape? Renato Moser and Karl Clemens Kübler provide an insight into the ongoing research.
