Anyone who wears a mask becomes a different being. In Emil Ferris’s comic ‘My Favorite Thing Is Monsters’, the protagonist Karen uses masks to express feelings and to play with her identity. Masks allow a playful shift between everyday life and fantasy, between person and character. Ethnologist Dr Fiona Siegenthaler and curator Anette Gehrig take the audience on a journey through the historico-cultural significance of the mask – from dance to theatre and from film to carnival.
