For the Nocturnes de l'Histoire, plunge into the heart of salt smuggling in Franche-Comté in the 18th century!
Discover this little-known part of regional history with André Ferrer, PhD in Modern History and honorary lecturer at the Université de Franche-Comté. Salt was an essential commodity in the 18th century, but heavily taxed by the gabelle tax, it was the subject of considerable clandestine trafficking. Fraud in the salt works, smuggling on the salt roads - smuggling was widespread, despite severe repression. Discover how taxation, borders and inequalities shaped resistance practices and a veritable parallel economy in the heart of Franche-Comté under the Ancien Régime. A fascinating lecture followed by a discussion with the audience. Wednesday, March 25 at 5:30pm. Free admission. Reservations required on 03 84 73 10 92.
