For the third edition of the "Globus Public Art Project", the Los Angeles-based Swiss artist Urs Fischer will not only be exhibiting on the façade of the "Globus" department store, but also in several locations in its surroundings, from the historic market square to the so-called "Totehüsli", an ossuary that once belonged to a church. Internationally renowned for his provocative sculptures and installations, which are captivating not least because of their complexity and wit, the artist refers with this exhibition project to the medieval Basel Dance of Death, an iconographic symbol of transience that addresses the omnipresence of death in life. Fischer's works take up this motif and translate it into a contemporary artistic language that confronts viewers with their own finiteness. In addition to his self-portrait made of candle wax, skeletal sculptures, some inspired by both art history and contemporary visual culture, as well as a new production for the department store façade will be presented.
